Article Abstract
We report on two patients without pre-existing neurological abnormality who presented to hospital with acute central respiratory failure. Both showed syringomyelia and an Arnold-Chiari malformation on magnetic resonance imaging, and both improved after decompression of the foramen magnum.Isolated respiratory failure has not to our knowledge been reported in association with syringomyelia.
